It shouldn't matter as much as it does, but people become blind to its power. This isn't just for people who are not financially well off and desperate; even people who already have a lot of money can lose sight of their surroundings and attempt to manipulate situations for the sake of greed. 

But that's not what's happening in this Reddit story. It's about a new couple, and things are going smoothly. The girl comes from money, but the guy's family struggles to pay the bills sometimes. Instead of being happy for her that she's financially stable, he resents her for it upon finding out. He blames her for 'not telling him.' The relationship probably won't last long.

    feel awkward about the differences between us. I don't care what his financial situation is. I love him anyway. He's seen my house and knows my parents run a business but he doesn't know about all my parents' assets which make a lot more money and is what keeps us comfortable.     -- - it's not like he outright asked how rich your family was and you lied to him or anything. He sounds like a whiny jerk. I've lived in poverty as well and never would've acted so unhinged over this. And I would've been embarrassed to have a partner start offering to pay for stuff like that.
